Do you have a Roland SP? Are you interested in getting one and seeing what the hype is about? This course takes you through the various workflows used to get you up and running with the SP404SX. We cover setting up the SP404SX for first time use, handling memory, sampling, sequencing, resampling, performing, and tracking your final track. The tips shown in this course may also apply to other SP versions such as the 404, 555, and 303.
Video 1 – Introduction to course. We cover the SP404SX accessories that are essential for getting the most out of this sampler. Other topics include dealing with storage and useful websites for SP users.
Video 2 – Soundcard Integration. This video is an overview of common scenarios encountered when setting up the SP with a sound card. Includes dealing with PFL, levels, and getting the SP sound into a DAW.
Video 3 – Loading Sounds. We discuss the multiple ways to load samples into the SP. Covering methods from using Roland Wave Converter, recording playback from your computer or DAW, recording directly from built-in SP microphone, and recording from a Mobile Device using an Aux Cable. This video will get you up and running with loading samples onto a SP
Video 4 – SP Controls & Functions. We discuss the basic functions of each Pad on the SP404SX. We show you how to apply and resample FX, basic sample editing, sample modes, and other various features. This video is a good primer to get you used to common functions, and explores features that are similar to other samplers and software.
Video 5 – Pattern Sequencer. This video shows everything you need to know about setting up a pattern, recording patterns, and triggering different patterns for song arrangements and performances.
Video 6 – Resample Mode. We start this video by answering the most asked question “Where do I find good samples”? So we navigate the internet and discuss a lot of cool tips on how to do just that. Then we proceed with resampling a sample from youtube, on the computer, to the SP and chop it up using the “Resample Method”. A good portion of this video is focused on chopping samples, cleaning up start and end times, and how to get your resampled sequences to “loop” for performances. This technique is the goto method for a lot of Lo Fi producers, and rumored to have been used on J.Dilla’s Donuts.
Video 7 – Performance & Arrangement. This video answers “how to save SP404SX beats?”. We discuss how to track your SP performance into your DAW and various things to consider when finalizing projects with the SP.
