“My definition of hip hop is taking elements from many other spheres of music to make hip hop. Whether it be breakbeat, whether it be the groove and grunt of James Brown or the pickle-pop sounds of Kraftwerk or Yellow Magic Orchestra, hip hop is also part of what they call hip-house now, or trip hop, or even parts of drum n’ bass.” Afrika Bambaataa
Greetings earthlings. PTSD here once again. Today I’m going to be reviewing International Breaks 707. Break beats have always been a fundamental part of Hip Hop. Producers have been searching the four corners of the earth to find original breaks. We all know breaks are a foundation to a good record. Legendary producers such as Preemo, Q-Tip, Erick Sermon, Large Professor, Havoc, RZA and the late J Dilla (R.I.P.) are all famous for their selections and applications of breaks.
The International Breaks series has been around for quite some time now, with this being the 7th installment. I personally have gotten great use out of the previous releases, and I was looking forward to this pack making its way to The Drum Broker.
Inside the pack you will find over 100 breaks in .WAV and 16–bit format. After taking my time and going through these breaks one by one, I was delighted by the content. Some of these breaks are EXTREMELY rare and highly usable. These samples have been sourced from countries such as Russia, China, Thailand, India, Korea, Japan, Bulgaria, Turkey, France, Holland, Italy, Poland, the UK, and Brazil.
The loops in this kit have an excellent polished sound, and have been carefully crafted, processed and optimized. Sounds from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s have found their way in here and vary in length. They come in numerous time signatures and are begging to be chopped-up, manipulated and stacked. It’s as simple as that.
If you are looking for those overly-sampled, soul-style breaks, then this kit is probably not for you. On the flip, if you are looking for some completely original royalty-free breaks, then this kit would be a perfect addition to your sound library. Lots of interesting ethnic textures are present. I personally found around ten that I loved and would plan to use in my future projects. These are the 10 that caught my ear.
- FRENCH GANGSTER
- NAM HONG
- PROOF LOOP
- SPACE JP
They’re also in alphabetical order for ease of use. You will be happy to know the digging team assigned to this project really went all-in on this one! These breaks are definitely exclusive and I have never had the pleasure of getting my ear drums around, let alone using them before. I look forward to getting my teeth stuck into this kit, and getting some good usage out of these original pieces. If you’re a heavy break beat user, collector, connoisseur or just in need of some fresh inspiration, I’d advise you to head on over to The Drum Broker and cop this kit. It’s $24.99 and available for instant download once you cough up the cash. So go do dat! Now!
