Monosole Music Presents Timmy Rickard, Tape To Dub Plate Vol.1

What’s good Maschine Masters fam? Woods here with another review. This time around I am going to be looking at “Monosole Music Presents Timmy Rickard, Tape To Dub Plate Vol.1”. So let’s get right to it.

This kit is the first in the series and consists of drum hits and breaks. What give this kit it’s feel is the fact they have been recorded straight to tape using vintage microphones, mixed using analogue outboard gear such as eq’s and compressors, mastered onto a 12″ dub plate, and finally sampled back off of the vinyl. All performed, recorded and engineered by Timmy Rickard himself.

As I delve into the kit, the first thing I notice is that it has been split into three volumes; Cymbal hits, Gretsch hits and finally 2 Mic breaks. Inside each folder there are pre vinyl master and vinyl mastered versions, which come in 16bit 44.1khz and 24bit 96khz respectively.

The cymbal hits folder contains bell hits, center hits, edge hits, high hats and rolls, giving you plenty of one shot sounds to sift through to find the right sound for the production you are working on. The gretsch folder contains a large choice of rack toms, floor toms and bass drum sounds. With around 20 sounds per folder, this again gives you plenty of choice to find the right sound. The final folder is the 2 mic drum break folder, which contains 30 really nice sounding break samples ranging in tempo from 82 – 132 bpm. All the breaks in this folder sound really nice and crisp with a touch of reverb on each, making them all sound really polished. The breaks have been played in a wide range of playing styles, which should make the avid crate digger happy should you choose to utilise these drums in your productions.

I personally haven’t had time to use these drums within my own productions yet, I will definitely soon though as I can tell that there is a lot of potential in these drums, I know I will have a lot of fun using them as well. I love that all the drums come with the option of both pre and post vinyl versions, giving you the option to use the clean versions to either keep as is or add your own choice of fx to warm them up how you please. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can just delve straight into the vinyl master folders to get quick access to warm, analogue, straight from vinyl sounding drums.

All in all this kit offers a wide choice of sounds to put to work in your productions and if you are like me and love a good drum break, there are plenty to choose from and they should keep you going for a while. With a price tag of $24.99, I think your definitely getting your money’s worth, whether you want to chop breaks or use single hits here and there. This pack is available at The Drum Broker so get yourself over there and take a look.

This is woods signing off MM fam, until next time stay creative and don’t hesitate to leave a comment if you have any questions. Peace.
