MSXII MPC Drums Volume 2
The hardware or “classic” MPC has been a staple in the hip hop community for years since its inception. From the MPC 60 through the MPC 5000, its users have argued tooth and nail that it has its own characteristic sound. It’s got special crunch or, saturation if you will. Many producers in this digital age haven’t had the luxury of sampling to their floppies, using a boot up disc, or having a screen less than an inch and a half to do everything on. Yet, many new producers want that old school feel. To help get there, our friends at MSXII have released a small pack of drums straight from their MPC 2000 to be loaded up into your Maschine, MPC Renaissance, Ableton Push, DAW or sampler of your choosing.
When we unzip this .rar file, we find that the samples are neatly broken up into 4 folders simply labeled “Folder 1, Folder 2 etc.” I believe that this is the layout because these are how they were laid in MSimps MPC as a program. I could be wrong, but if so, it would have been great to not only get the .wav files (16 bit), but also the MPC program. Just to give the user a little bit more insight to MSXiis world in how they lay out their drums on their pads. I know many users that get this will be using MPCs (new and old) or Maschine, which also supports importing MPC programs. The drums however, lack absolutely nothing for character. Very rich and warm sounding with samples either straight from vinyl or were played by MSXii themselves. What I really enjoy, is that not all the samples are “perfect” chops. There is still a little work to be done by the user and I like that.
The folks at MSXii have been really busy over the last year. They just keep cranking out great kits for their customers and keep doing it at a high level. MPC Drums Vol. 2 was absolutely no exception to that. Bangin drums, great sound, and will have users off the ground immediately. Like I said, the only thing I would have liked to have seen is them giving up the MPC Program. On a scale of 1-16 pads (1 being stuck in a traffic jam on a hill driving a stick shift, 16 being on the Audubon with a lambo), this is ranking in at a solid 13 pads. Make sure you get yours.
