How organized is your sound library?

How organized is your sound library?

So this past week I have had to format my computer and Yes, this meant that all my producer kits, drum kits and sounds had to be re-imported into the Maschine library. Absolute nightmare. The worse thing is that I’m one of those producers that like to manually upload their sounds, so I know exactly where they are stored. The last thing I want to do is waste my time looking for that certain sound. I at least want to narrow down the search, so it’s quicker to locate. I want to be able to find it quickly and not lose my flow.

I found it a long, tiring process, but it was time well spent and its definetly worth it in the long run. I believe having an organized sound library makes me a more efficient producer. Being more efficient means more beats right? It may improve my quality. I don’t know, buts it’s the setup that I want and it works for me. It’s just simply a matter of investing time, to save time.

This past week I have really come to appreciate how I organized my kits, drum loops and sound libraries that I have accumulated. Separate folders for certain sounds really helped me out when importing. It took me far less time to import an organized kit. The majority of my sounds are stored on my external HD and that also has to be organized. Less time importing sounds / finding sounds and more time making beats / practicing techniques, will only improve any producer’s game. It is a simple equation.

I bet any producer who buys a kit, downloads it, “sighs” when they find out the Hi-Hats are spread all over the place, or the Percussion isn’t labeled correctly. It is undesirable. Well for me anyway.

But how much time should you invest in your sound library? You don’t want to over do it and make yourself inefficient right? Don’t want to waste time fine combing your library when you could be making beats? I suppose that’s a question you should ask yourself. What works best for me? Every producer is different, we all have different styles (well we should) and we all have things that work best for ourselves. Sometimes less is more.

What’s your opinion MM? Do you have an organized sound library? Does this make you a more efficient producer?

I would like to think that producers manually organize their sound libraries. Isn’t this part of being a producer? I might just be a fussy producer, but I’d like to know your opinions on this subject.

Drop a comment below and let us know your thoughts on this matter. Until next time you can catch me at @UKAntSmith.
