How to Play Hip Hop Chords on Any Drum Machine

Wassup everybody! This is your boy JFilt and don’t worry if you’ve never heard of me because this is my first guest post ever! I have a passion for helping beat makers like myself and today I want to discuss playing hip hop chords. Truthfully, hip hop chords can be any chords used in hip hop music because I believe there’s no one genre that owns all of them. Having said that, let’s investigate how one plays these chords.

If you are only into sampling music, this may not apply to you. But let’s pretend you wanna expand your style and possibly add onto the samples of your beats. A dope way of doing this is by playing at least two or more notes at the same time or in other words, chords. I understand that everyone doesn’t know how to play chords or may have a hard time trying to figure out what to play. This is why guitar and piano players have what you call chord books. These are diagrams of chords like the pictures you see below. Basically, all they do is play what they see on the diagram. “A minor” is a type of chord which sounds dark or dramatic. The darkened circles represent the notes you press with your fingers.

I figured if they can do it, why can’t we? So at the time, I questioned where could I find a chord book for people with drum machines. I mean, to me a drum machine can be used as a melodic instrument too right? Not just drums. Man, I searched hours all over the internet for a chord book dealing with drum machines. Fam, I couldn’t find one to save my life. So it was at about this time my old man’s teachings popped into memory. He told me once “if you can’t find what you’re looking for, create it your damn self.”

So that’s exactly what I did and after almost a year of working on this project, I created Essential HipHop Chords. If you don’t know already, it’s very possible to play chords on your drum machine. This system comprising of mass chords applies to 16 pad drum machines such as Maschine, MPC Renaissance, MPC 60 thru MPC 5000 or even 12 pad drum machines like the MPC 500. Everyone may not be able to afford a keyboard or have the ability to quickly find chords. That’s the purpose of this book which is actually an ebook made for beat makers ranging in all skill levels.
