“We need a UNION!!!” This is a subject that has been floating around the producer community recently. It was 1st mentioned by !llmind on twitter last month and molded into a real life idea with producer manager, Ivan of 1 Shot Management. Basically saying that new producers are getting underpaid to do major label work. Industry heads are taking advantage of the lack of knowledge of the young hungry beatmakers. The free music market also hurts the producer while the artists get show money with no kick back to us. This reminds me of the Rape’n U Records Skit on The LOX album. Damn that’s F’d up!
This shows that this just not a new producer issue, its ALL producer issue! Theresa, Assistant for producer Symbolyc 1 (Kanye West, Beyonce, 50 Cent):
I feel that a union is a great idea as the new producer enters the “Professional Level” of the music industry to make sure we get fair payment for our craft. But we can also educate ourselves now and have a business mind on the independent level. You are a business just like any other profession and must have standards to create revenue. Barbershop, restaurant, retail store, its all the same!
Check out this video w/ producer DJ Pain 1 (Young Jeezy, Meek Mill, 50 Cent), Ivan Rivera (manager of The J.U.S.T.I.CE. League) and Godxilla (Madison Media Institute Professor); discussing these problems for producers today.
